What Is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?
The program is a $2.3 billion Federal initiative aimed at lowering the upfront cost of battery storage for households and small businesses. It will offer rebates of approximately $370 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of usable storage, making systems significantly more affordable for everyday Australians.
Key details include:
- Start date: July 1st, 2025
- Eligible battery sizes: 5 kWh to 50 kWh
- Rebate value: $370 per kWh (up to around $4,000 off for an 11kWh system)
- Battery must be Virtual Power Plant (VPP) ready
- Installed by Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved installers (like OneAU)
- Installations completed from 6 April 2025 are eligible, provided they are not commissioned until after the official start date of July 1st, 2025. This means you can install now and still be eligible
- Program is for homeowners and small businesses adding a battery to an existing solar system or installing both together
